Phantom Game Console Unveiled
Can it compete with Sony's Playstation2 and Microsoft's Xbox?

Phantom game consoleWhen a small company located in Florida announced they were entering the video game console business and take on market behemoths Sony Playstation2 and Microsoft Xbox, most industry watchers were shocked and extremely skeptical even if they had good reason to be. When you think about it, could a company that no one had basically heard of until their announcement take on companies that has already gained control of over 90% of the entire market share? Sony and Microsoft’s dominance has even pushed out other high profile companies like Sega and has made Nintendo rethink their GameCube console presence?

Does Infinium Labs even have a chance
With a combined total of consoles running in the multimillions, Sony’s Playstation2 and Microsoft’s Xbox reign as the top selling game consoles worldwide. Their dominance is so strong that former console maker Sega abandoned the business just a couple of years ago due to sub-par sales of their 128bit Dreamcast console. Sega then turned their attention to developing games for the other platforms and has been successful in doing so. Even gaming powerhouse Nintendo has been having trouble competing with their GameCube console since its 2000 release.

Even though they’ve tried to persuade players with GameCube exclusives, they’ve still had trouble penetrating beyond Sony and Microsoft. It’s still questionable whether Nintendo will continue to fight the console battle or concede it and turn their attention to their wildly popular GameBoy product line especially with their marketshare being challenged by Nokia’s N-Gage and Sony’s handheld gaming device.

Infinium Labs is definitely heading into some very dangerous and expensive territory in not only taking on one Goliath…but two of them! This is a battle that I’m looking forward to seeing. Infinium Labs has laid down some very interesting features but proving it to the buying public will be their biggest challenge. The official Phantom website still doesn’t announce any games or developers who are supporting it which makes this an even bigger mystery since games are the only selling point for this product.

Just in case you missed the specs of the Phantom game console, here they are as given by Infinium Labs:

In looking at the specs, I’m quite puzzled by the very general descriptions. What’s up with “up to 3.0GHz”, “high performance nVidia video card”, “high performance Intel motherboard?” Do the specs remind you of a PC too? I guess it’s just me.
